The SGI Class of 1993 Salutes the SGI Class of 1958
Pictures and Tales of Days Gone By:

We have added this page as a salute to "Days Gone By." This page will change as tales and pictures begin to arrive from other alumni, specifically those members of the Class of "58, who we are sure have a great deal to share! We hope you enjoy!

  1. 1815 - Springville is unofficially named, “Fiddler’s Green.”
  2. 1830 - The first high school in Erie County opens; its name: Springville Academy
  3. 1844 - The "SPRINGVILLE EXPRESS" becomes the area's first newspaper
  4. 1858 - W.A. Ferrin publishes the "PENNY WEEKLY" (The more things change the more they stay the same!)
  5. 1867 - "THE SPRINGVILLE JOURNAL" begins publication
  6. 1868 - The Great Fire of Springville destroys buildings on the south side of Main Street from Pearl Street almost to Buffalo Street
  7. 1877 - H.G. Leland purchases the Springville House (built in 1824) renaming it the Leland House (sound familiar?)
  8. 1884 - Bell Telephones installed in Springville (and people have referred to us as a backward community?!)
  9. 1889 - Our most famous alumni Glenn S "Pop" Warner graduates from Good Ole GI
  10. 1891 - Dr. Ralph B. Waite begins operation of "The Antidolor Manufacturing Company" (For the new kids on the block: Springville Becomes the "COCAINE CAPITOL OF THE WORLD!"
  11. 1900 - Village imposes curfew for ages 16 and under
  12. November 11, 1918 - Bells and sirens sound at 4:00 am, announcing the end of World War I
  13. 1944 - The Springville Canning Company Factory utilizes Prisoners of War as factory laborers (Hmmm, does anyone recall being taught that one in school?)
  14. 1947 - Springville Airport opens. (Must have flown away, huh?)
  15. 1958 - Greatest Class in SGI History Graduates
  16. 1963 - Springville Area in eye of state as Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller participates in groundbreaking cermonies for the Nuclear Service Center
  17. 1970's Springville area forever memorialized with Top 40 artists Jud Strunk's new song "WHO CUT THE TREES ON NUNWEILER HILL"
  18. 1980's - Springville Area hits International Spotlight when The National Enquirer feature's area urban legend: The Town That Killed Itself To Escape Deadly Curse
  19. March 2003 - Fire takes old Gramco mill
  20. 1993 - New Greatest Class in SGI History Graduates!
  21. April 19, 2003 - Julie's Pizzeria & Bob's News Burn

FIRE DESTROYS PIZZA RESTAURANT, NEWSSTAND

Only a minute or so after a lunchtime crowd of about two dozen people was evacuated from a downtown Springville restaurant Friday, the ceiling flashed with heavy fire, according to Springville Fire Chief Charlie Skelton.

Luckily, no injuries were reported to patrons at Julie's Pizzeria & Restaurant or Bob's News next door when the blaze tore through the 12 E. Main St. building just before 1 p.m.
